In February 1943, Stefan Rowecki, the leader of the Polish Home Army ( Armia Krajowa or AK) until his arrest by the Gestapo in June 1943, drafted a plan for a national armed uprising throughout Poland called Operation Tempest. In order to maintain historical accuracy, I have used the names of places as they were in 1944, but have included present-day designations in parentheses to avoid confusion. Many of the locations mentioned in this article have changed names several times over the course of the twentieth century.
